Bright Idea!

In a nice variation on the ‘playing a different tune on the ukulele every day for the whole year’, Steve Phillips has decided to use it to raise awareness & collect donations for SolarAid. This charity sends low-cost solar lights to families without electricity in remote areas of Africa (such as regions of Malawi, Uganda & Zambia), so that they can use free renewable energy, instead of relying on dangerous & inefficient home-made kerosene lamps, which are expensive to run.

Steve will be recording & posting a new song daily throughout 2018 & I’m sure will appreciate some ideas for sun & light-related numbers! He’s already done Bring Me Sunshine & Mr Blue Sky.

A donation of around £4 can get a lamp to a family. And donors leaving their email address will get the chance to have all 365 uke arrangements at the end of the year.

Here’s a cheery Johnny Cash number to enjoy, I Hardly Ever Sing Beer Drinking Songs:

Strummer of Sport 2

Just a quick warning to all uke players that, between 27 July – 12 August 2012, this song & many others that breach the strict Olympic copyright laws will be banned from play within the London area.

So get strumming now before the ban and let the rest of us know in the comments section if there are any other tunes we need to avoid:

Aloha ‘Oe

English: Cover to Aloha Oe, 1890 by Queen Lili...

Cover of Aloha ‘Oe, 1890, from Wikipedia

This famous Hawaiian farewell song was written by Princess Lili’uokalani in 1878. Its haunting melody has been covered numerous times, from the more usual ukulele and steel guitars to full orchestral; from Elvis Presley, Andy Williams, Duane Eddy, Marty Robbins and Johnny Cash to the Goombay Dance Band.
