Top Of The Ukes

UK number one on this date in 1965 was the Sonny & Cher hit I Got You Babe. Exactly twenty years later, the UB40 & Chrissie Hynde cover version also topped the charts. Here’s Sergio Algozzino’s (& his sister’s) uke version. It’s like there’s a mirror between them!

PLUCking Ukes – Ten Minute Practice Tips

Over the last few weeks I’ve had a number of different discussions about how people go about practicing – where to find the time; what people do; how to keep it interesting etc.

One of our new members contacted me to say that he would be too busy over the Summer to attend club nights but would return in the Autumn, adding that he’d then hope to have time to practice & keep up with things. Particularly as he’s a beginner, I suggested he try to fit in some regular daily practice,

I know it’s hard when things are busy but if you can, try your best to do just ten minutes to keep your hand in. Pick a time you can make every day for having a quick strum on the uke (eg first thing in the morning before you get busy, while you’re waiting for dinner to cook, when the TV adverts are on etc). Some folk set a timer! Read the rest of this entry »

PLUC Tales – Ron’s Progress

Ron's Lani Ukulele

Ron’s Lani Ukulele

Just an update of my ukulele activity since I have not been able to attend club.

I have purchased and subsequently sold several ukuleles. I have enjoyed the opportunity to sample them. I now have my Flea and a Lani ukulele which I think I will keep.

The Flea still rates well with me and I have no intention of selling that. As for the Lani, it was said that if I bought it, I would never buy another for a long time, which I guess is good news for me. LOL.

I have also learned a couple of fingerstyle songs, from Mark Kailana Nelson’s book Learn to Play Fingerstyle Solos for Ukulele, among which are: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, All Through The Night and La Mananitas, which of course meant I learned to read tabs. (See the Ukulele Hunt review for a full song listing.) Read the rest of this entry »
